Scanning

Update a position's status straight from the shop floor by scanning its code, with any 2D scanner.

Scanning lets the shop floor move a part along without touching a keyboard or hunting through the app. Each position carries codes for its stages, and scanning one opens a quick confirmation to set that status.

Plug and play

You do not need special hardware or any setup. Any standard 2D barcode scanner works: the kind that plugs in over USB and behaves like a keyboard. Plug it in and start scanning, with no drivers to install and nothing to configure.

Behind the scenes, the scanner "types" the code's web address, and the app recognizes it and opens the status screen. A phone camera works too, since the codes are ordinary links.

Where the codes are

The codes live on a position's traveler, the sheet that follows the part around the workshop. Each scannable stage has its own code:

  • Preparation
  • In Progress
  • Control
  • Completed

Generate the traveler for a position, print it, and it goes to the floor with the part.

Scanning a position

Scan the stage you want

Point the scanner at the code for the stage the part has reached, for example In Progress when work starts on it.

Confirm

A screen opens showing the part and the status it is about to move to. Confirm to apply it.

The part's status updates straight away, and the change shows everywhere the position appears, the same as changing it by hand.

Anyone on the floor can scan

Updating a status by scanning is open to every member, not just admins and moderators. That is the point: the people making the parts move them along, without needing extra permissions.

Codes are tied to your organization

A code only works inside the organization it belongs to. Scanning one from another organization, or for a part that is not yours, brings up a mismatch warning rather than changing anything. You also need to be signed in for the update to go through.
