A tool's individual units, and keeping each one's condition up to date.
Open a tool from the list to see its units: the physical copies you own of that tool. This is where the catalogue entry becomes real stock, since the tool's Total and Usable counts on the list come from the units here.

Adding and updating units
Use Add unit to record a physical tool you hold, giving it a status, a location, and a serial number if it has one. Add one unit for each copy you own.
Keep each unit's status current as tools wear: move one to Dull when it needs regrinding, to Re-sharpened once it is back, or to Broken when it is done. The usable count on the tools list, and the low-stock warning that goes with it, follow from these statuses, so keeping them honest is what makes the reorder warning trustworthy.
